Empowering Resilience through
Resolution Planning

About the symposium

“Hindsight is a wonderful thing but foresight is better, especially when it comes to saving life, or some pain.”

The words of the famous English poet, William Blake, hold no more truth especially during this time when financial institutions navigate through a landscape marked with challenges and uncertainties. The banking crisis in the US and Europe early this year revealed the importance of resilience as a strategic focus for financial institutions. While insurance failure experiences of recent years suggest that unexpected events are becoming increasingly widespread, the negative impact on the financial markets, the economy and society has hastened the development of resolution planning. Financial institutions which are more resilient are likely to weather challenges more effectively. With resilience, they could even potentially unlock or maximise value under times of stress or crisis.

The inaugural PIDM National Resolution Symposium 2023 will bring together experts and thought leaders in the area of resolution and crisis preparedness to discuss emerging issues facing the industry. From panel sessions to masterclasses and round-table discussions, the PIDM National Resolution Symposium 2023 will keep participants engaged in this important and relevant topic.

History tends to repeat itself when the memory of the last crisis fades away. The 2023 banking turmoil in the US and Europe shows that failure could happen to any financial institution which sparks further confidence issues in other financial institutions, fuelled by news and noises in the social media. This panel session examines the causes of the recent bank failures and their impact on depositors, stakeholders, other financial institutions, the financial system, and the broader economy. Importance & Benefits of Recovery and Resolution Planning

Venue: Topaz Ballroom

The former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are not always useful, but planning is indispensable”. These words continue to hold relevance today as we witness the recent failure of banks in the US and Europe which took place at an unprecedented scale and speed. While mergers and acquisitions transactions and transfer of business schemes may have been around in the financial industry, the transfer of a financial institution to another entity or acquirer during times of distress may be a challenging and complex exercise. Financial intermediary firms serve important functions in the economy and they often form part of a complex group of entities which are closely interconnected with each others. In this session, we hear from real-life practitioners on challenges faced by banks in undertaking separability assessment as part of the resolution planning and resolvability process.
